Actress Samantha Bond is set to appear in The Lie, Florian Zeller's play which opens at the Menier Chocolate Factory from September.

The piece, which has been translated into English by Christopher Hampton, follows Alice, who spots her friend's husband out with a woman who isn't her friend. She is torn on whether to tell the friend the truth, or save face by lying to her. Alice's husband Paul believes it would be better to lie, but Alice doesn't know who would benefit and who would suffer from doing so.

Samantha Bond will play Alice. Her previous theatre credits include the West End productions of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, What the Butler Saw and the Broadway production of Amy's View. She is also known for her television work in Outnumbered as well as playing Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond films.

The Lie will have set designs by Anna Fleischle, costumes by Loren Elstein, lighting by Howard Harrison and sound designs by Gregory Clarke. Isobel Waller-Bridge, the sister of Fleabag actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, will provide original compositions for the production.

Zeller's last play to run in London, The Truth, opened at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2016 and went on to be nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Comedy following a West End transfer.

The French playwright's other works include the plays The Mother (2010), The Father (2012) and Une Heure de tranquillité (2013), which was adapted into the 2014 film Do Not Disturb.

The Lie will run at the Menier Chocolate Factory from 14th September to 18th November, with an official opening on 27th September.
