SIR PETER HALL 71 YEARS OLD TODAY

Theatre director, Sir Peter Hall is 71 years old today.

His full name is Sir Peter Reginald Frederick Hall. He directed his first professional production in 1953 at the Theatre Royal Royal, Windsor. A year later he was in London, at the Arts Theatre, where among other plays he directed Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" and Anouilh's "The Waltz of the Toreadors".

In 1960 he became the Managing Director of the newly formed Royal Shakespeare Company(RSC). He resigned in 1968, though he remained Co-Director and continued to direct plays for the company.

From 1973 to 1988 he was Director of the National Theatre, and in the 90s Sir Peter formed his own rep company 'The Peter Hall Company', which had seasons at the Old Vic and Piccadilly Theatres.

His epic production of "Tantalus was at the Barbican Centre in April this years part of the BITE season.

He is currently directing The Royal Family at the Haymarket Theatre, and will be directing Lady Windemere's Fan at the Haymarket in February 2002.
