The 70th Annual Tony Awards took place last night at New York's Beacon Theatre, hosted by Tony winner James Cordon. As predicted, smash hit musical Hamilton dominated the evening, picking up a total of 11 Tony Awards, but failed to break the record of 12 wins previously set by The Producers. As well as being featured during the telecast along with all the other musical nominees, it also had the honour to both open the show (introducing its host) and close the show.

Following a strong number of British nominations, actress Cynthia Erivo flew the flag for British winners, winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role in 'The Color Purple' which she originated at the Menier Chocolate Factory. The production also won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.

The Young Vic's production of A View From The Bridge directed by Ivo van Hove won the award for Best Revival of a Play, with Van Hove winning Best Director.

The ceremony paid tribute to the victims of the Orlando shootings with a special opening message dedicating the awards to them and everyone in attendace wearing a specially designed ribbon.
