THEATRE PEOPLE IN NEW YEAR HONOURS LIST

Theatre related people in the New Year Honours List include actor Sir Ian McKellen (Order of the Companions of Honour); actor Richard Griffiths (OBE); director & actor Ian Talbot (OBE); comic actress Julie Walters (CBE); and playwright Hanif Kureishi (CBE)

Sir Ian McKellen CBE joins the exclusive Order of the Companions of Honour (CH) , which is restricted to just 65 members alongside the Queen. He told the BBC, "I am honoured to join an order which includes such distinguished practitioners in the arts". The 68-year-old actor and gay rights campaigner said, "It is particularly pleasing that 'equality' is included in my citation." His recent London stage credits include "King Lear" and "The Seagull" for the RSC at the New London Theatre theatre in 2007; "The Cut" at the Donmar Warehouse in 2006; "Aladdin" at the Old Vic in 2004 and 2005; "Dance of Death" at the Lyric in 2003; "An Enemy of the People" at the Olivier, NT in 1997 and 1998; "Peter PanP" at the Olivier, NT in 1997

Actor Richard Griffiths (60) (OBE) recent London stage credits includes "Equus" at the Giegud in 2007; "The History Boys" at the Lyttelton, NT in 2004 and 2005; "Heroes" at the Wyndham's in 2005; "Luther" at the Olivier, NT in 2001.

Director and actor Ian Talbot (65) (OBE) who stood down as Artistic Director of the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park, in 2007 after 20 years at the helm.

Comic Actress Julie Walters (57) (CBE) London stage credits includes "Acorn Antiques" at the Haymarket in 2005; "All My Sons" at the Cottesloe, NT in 2000.

Playwright Hanif Kureishi (53) (CBE) recent plays performed in London include "When the Night Begins" at the Hampstead in 2004; "Sleep With Me" at the Cottesloe, NT in 1999.
