Owen Teale was born in Swansea, Wales in 1961. He trained at the Guildford School of Acting before making his TV debut in 1984 in The Mimosa Boys. He later appeared in Great Expectations (1989), Knights of God (1989) and Boon (1990). He caught his break when he was cast as Will Scarlet in Robin Hood (1991). Since then Teale has appeared in Conspiracy (2001) as Roland Freisler and King Arthur (2004) as Pelagius. In 2005 he played the lead role in Marian, Again directed by David Drury.
He is perhaps best known for his role in hit HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones as Alliser Thorne from 2011 til 2016. Other notable TV appearances include Spooks (2004), Midsomer Murders (2005) and Inspector Lewis (2007).
In 1997 Teal won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his role of Torvald in Insen’s A Doll’s House, alongside Janet McTeer in the Belasco Theatre, New York. Since then he has played in numerous West End shows including the title role in Ivanov at the Cottesloe Theatre, Kurt in Dance a Death alongside Sir Ian McKellen at the Lyric Theatre and Creditors at Donmar Warehouse. He has also notably played James in Passion Play and Jan in A Time To Reap.
Teale returns to theatre in No Man’s Land by Nobel prize laureate Harold Pinter at Wyndham’s Theatre. He will star alongside Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in Sean Mathias acclaimed production that will run from 8 September 2016 until 17 December 2016.
