Bridget Jones The Musical is a new musical centred on the much loved character from the successful film series Bridget Jones's Diary. The musical adaptation has been on the cards since 2009 when the first workshop reading of a script by Helen Fielding, original Bridget Jones author, was held in London. The project has gone through many stages since then, with a staged workshop being led by Olivier Award winning actress Sheridan Smith in 2011, with Bertie Carvel and Julian Ovenden reading the roles of her romantic interests Mark Darcy and Daniel Cleaver. Creatives were hopeful for a full production to be mounted in 2012 but all plans seemed to fall through and the creative team appear to have gone their separate ways.
But with the recent release of the third film in the Bridget Jones series (Bridget Jones’ Baby), speculation has mounted that the musical will still see the light of day, and author Helen Fielding recently confirmed in an interview that she has in fact written the musical, although not finished it, and that a full production will all depend on if and when the theatre becomes available. But we can expect it in the next few years.
