Acclaimed actress and writer Maureen Lipman is to direct the world stage premiere of Jack Rosenthal’s The Knowledge.

The Knowledge is based on the iconic 1979 TV film comedy. Maureen not only played a leading role in the film, but is also Jack Rosenthal’s widow.

Set against the backdrop of the harsh economic times of 1979, the play follows the hilarious struggles of four Londoners as they attempt to better themselves by attempting the fearsome “Knowledge” - the process of becoming a London black cab taxi driver. Standing between them and the coveted Green Badge is the eccentric Mr. Burgess, the examiner. Also known as “The Vampire”, he is on an obsessive mission to maintain standards.”

The cast will feature Steven Pacey as Mr Burgess, alongside James Alexandrou, Jenna Augen, Celine AbrahamsLouise CallaghanBen CaplanAlice FelgateFabien Franke and Michael Chance.

Maureen Lipman is an Olivier Award-winning actress who recently appeared in Lettice and Lovage in the West End with Felicity Kendal, and has previously directed a touring production of Barefoot in the Park, in which she also starred.

The story has been adapted for the stage by Simon Block, and will feature set designs by Nicolai Hart-Hansen, costumes by Jonathan Lipman and sound design by Andrew Johnson.

Production images have been released for the stage premiere of The Knowledge, directed by Maureen Lipman at Charing Cross Theatre. The Knowledge is an adaptation of Lipman’s late husband’s 70s television film. Jack Rosenthal’s story comedy is about a group of people training to become London black cab drivers by doing ‘The Knowledge’, the process by which cabbies learn the 20,000 streets in London. The film was shown in 1979 and starred Lipman alongside Nigel Hawthorne, Mick Ford and Kim Taylforth.

Casting has been announced for the stage premiere of The Knowledge, an adaptation of Jack Rosenthal’s television comedy, at the Charing Cross Theatre.  Directed by his wife Maureen Lipman, Rosenthal’s 1979 comedy is about a group of people training to become London black cab drivers by doing ‘The Knowledge’, the process by which cabbies learn the 20,000 streets in London.  Lipman also starred in the TV film, alongside Nigel Hawthorne, Mick Ford and Kim Taylforth.
