- Categories cover plays and musicals; both new work and revivals
It's getting close to the most prestigious date in the London theatre calendar: the annual Olivier Awards. In 2026 the star-studded ceremony takes place on 12 April at the Royal Albert Hall, and all the best shows that opened between February 2025 and February 2026 will be vying for prizes.
The Olivier Awards categories include Best New Play, Best Musical, Best Revival, Best Musical Revival, and Best Family Show, as well as awards for acting, directing, design, opera and dance, plus a category devoted to shows in affiliate theatres which celebrates outstanding work beyond the West End. Read our full guide to the Oliviers categories here.
Expect to see a big presence from one of the year's biggest new openings, Paddington The Musical, in that Best Musical category, along with the likes of The Great Gatsby and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, as fantastic homegrown British work does battle with the latest exciting shows to cross the pond.
New play contenders in a year teeming with powerful shows across a diverse range of subjects and styles may well include another transatlantic mix, with possible contenders such as Dracula, KENREX, Oh, Mary!, Stereophonic, and Inter Alia.
In the always competitive revival categories, musical hits Evita, Into the Woods and The Producers will likely lead the charge, and on the play side, keep an eye on acclaimed West End productions like All My Sons, Much Ado About Nothing and The Weir.
