Bat Out of Hell the Musical to run at the London Coliseum

The Meat Loaf musical will run at the London Coliseum following a run at the Palace Theatre in Manchester

A new musical by Jim Steinman based on the Meat Loaf album Bat of Out Hell is set to open at the London Coliseum in summer 2017, following a run at the Manchester Opera House from 17 February 2017.

Billed as Bat Out of Hell - the Musical, the project has taken years of development by composer Jim Steinman, and comes to the stage in a new production directed by Obie Award-winning director Jay Scheib.

Based on the most influential albums of Jim Steinman's storied collaboration with singer Meat Loaf, Bat Out of Hell - the Musical is described as a "romantic adventure about rebellious youth and passionate love against the backdrop of a post-cataclysmic city. Following Strat, who has fallen in love with the daughter of the despotic Falco, this new musical is a high-octane rock'n'roll adventure that tears through over 20 of Steinman songs." 

The original 'Bat Out Of Hell' album has sold over 50 million copies worldwide, and was created during Steinman's time at Amherst college. Returning to the album over 15 years later, Steinman and Meat Loaf created 'Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell' which contained the song "I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)", before completing the trilogy in 2006 with 'Bat Out Of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose'. The musical will use songs from all three albums, including the hits "Dead Ringer For Love", "It's All Coming Back to Me Now", "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" and "You Took the Words Right Outta My Mouth".

Jim Steinman is no stranger to musical theatre, having previously used the songs for a workshop production of 'Neverland', a futuristic version of Peter Pan in 1974. In 1996 he collaborated with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber on the musical Whistle Down the Wind, for which he provided the lyrics. The show opened in Washington D.C and later at the Aldwych Theatre in London in 1998. He wrote the lyrics and produced the hit song "No Matter What" for Boyzone, which became the breakout hit from the musical.

He composed the music for the hit European musical Dance of the Vampires (Tanz der Vampire) which opened in Vienna in 1997, before transferring to Broadway, finally opening at the  at the Minskoff Theatre on 18 October 2002 starring Michael Crawford.
