Dear Evan Hansen, & Juliet and Leopoldstadt among 2020 Olivier Awards winners

The postponed ceremony took place at the London Palladium on 25 October 2020.

After a long wait for this year's ceremony, the 2020 Olivier Awards took place at the London Palladium on the final Sunday in October. Among the big winners at this year's ceremony included Dear Evan Hansen and & Juliet which both took three awards home, along with Leopoldstadt winning Best New Play.

Dear Evan Hansen, which opened at the Noel Coward Theatre in 2019, won the hotly contested award for Best New Musical. The West End transfer also won Best Original Score or Orchestration, along with Sam Tutty winning his first solo Olivier for Best Actor in a Musical as Evan Hansen.

The world premiere of & Juliet at the Shaftesbury Theatre was highly commended last night, with three of its cast members taking home awards. Miriam-Teak Lee won Best Actress in a Musical as Juliet, with Cassidy Janson and David Bedella winning Best Actress and Actor in a Musical in a supporting role respectively.

Tom Stoppard's newest play, Leopoldstadt, won the award for Best New Play, with Adrian Scarborough also winning the Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Cyrano de Bergerac took home the award for Best Revival of a Play.

In other categories, Emilia won three awards including Best Entertainment or Comedy Play. Its creative team was honoured too, with the show winning Best Sound Design (Emma Laxton) and Best Costume Design (Joanna Scotcher). Richard Gadd's Baby Reindeer won the Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre.

In the dance categories, Ingoma by Mthuthuzeli November for Ballet Black won the award for Best Dance production, while Sara Bara's choreography and performance in Ballet Flamenco won Outstanding Achievement in Dance.

Best New Opera Production was awarded to Billy Budd, while the children's ensemble in Noye's Fluude won Outstanding Achievement in Opera.
