Full casting announced for Caroline, Or Change West End transfer
The full cast joining Sharon D Clarke for the West End transfer of Tony Kushner's Caroline, or Change at the Playhouse Theatre has been announced.
The musical, which is about Caroline Thibodeaux, a Louisiana maid who becomes friends with the eight-year-old son of the family she works for, is directed by Michael Longhurst and received a sell-out run at Chichester Festival Theatre as well as at London's Hampstead Theatre.
It stars Olivier Award winner Clarke, who told LondonTheatre.co.uk that she "hopes audiences are moved" by the story being told. Over the course of a hugely successful career, Clarke has also scarred in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (National Theatre) Ghost the Musical (Piccadilly Theatre) and We Will Rock You (Dominion Theatre).
Alongside her, the West End run - which begins on 20th November - will be Naana Agyei-Ampadu, Keisha Amponsa Banson, Alastair Brookshaw, Me'sha Bryan, Angela Caesar, Dujonna Gift-Simms, Sue Kelvin, Teddy Kempner, Ako Mitchell, Abiona Omonua, Vincent Pirillo, Tanisha Spring and Lauren Ward with Cassiopeia Berkeley-Agyepong, Zalika Henry, Laura Medforth, Timothy Quinlan and Teddy Wills.
Nine young performers have been cast in and will alternate the roles of Noah (Isaac Forward, Aaron Gelkoff and Jack Meredith), Jackie (Mark Mwangi, Kenya Sandy and Jeremiah Waysome) and Joe (Josiah Choto, David Dube and Raphael Higgins-Hume).
In a five-star review of the run at the Hampstead Theatre, critic Mark Shenton hailed the musical "a show of complex and multiple layers that reveal themselves with deeper poignancy and fractured feeling each time you see it".
With book and lyrics by Kushner and music by Jeanine Tesori, the production has designs by Fly Davis, choreography by Ann Yee, musical direction by Nigel Lilley, lighting design by Jack Knowles, and sound design by Paul Arditti.
Caroline, Or Change is at the Playhouse Theatre from 20th November 2018 to 9th February 2019.
