Actress Pearl Mackie will appear in a revival of Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party when it opens at the Harold Pinter Theatre next year.

The Doctor Who actress joins the previously announced Toby Jones, Stephen Mangan and Zoe Wanamaker. Further casting is to be announced.

Pinter's second full-length play, The Birthday Party tells the story of Stanley Webber, a piano player who lives in a neglected house in the English seaside town run by Petey and Meg Bowles, a couple in their sixties. On the day of Stanley's birthday, two ominous strangers arrive looking for him, and ruin his otherwise eventless party.

Pearl Mackie currently stars in Doctor Who alongside Peter Capaldi, and will make her final appearance in the show on Christmas Day. She has previously appeared in the West End production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, as well as Only Human (Theatre503) and Obama-ology (Finborough Theatre).

On the announcement, Mackie said: "I'm delighted to be back in the West End working with such a prolific director like Ian Rickson - and an incredible cast - on this rich, dark and enthralling play. I love how Pinter creates character and I feel very lucky to work on one of his best-known plays."

The Birthday Party will be directed by directed by Ian Rickson, with designs by the Quay Brothers, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Simon Baker and music by Stephen Warbeck. It runs at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 9th January to 14th April, with an official opening night on 18th January.
