This year's Olivier Awards have been dished out at a ceremony in London at the Royal Albert Hall, with Hamilton and The Ferryman dominating in the musicals and plays categories.

Hamilton won seven of a possible 10 awards at last night's Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, Best Supporting Actor in a Musical (Michael Jibson) and Best Actor in a Musical (Giles Terera). It also won two of the creative categories - lighting and sound design - Best Theatre Choreographer and Outstanding Achievement in Music.  Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical about the founding father Alexander Hamilton opened at the Victoria Palace Theatre in December to a string of five-star reviews.

Jez Butterworth's The Ferryman took home three awards: Best New Play, Best Director (Sam Mendes) and Best Actress (Laura Donnelly), while the National Theatre's production of Follies, which is set to return to London next year, won the award for Best Musical Revival and Best Costume Design.

While Hamilton won best musical actor categories, it was Girl From the North Country that won both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress in a musical, with Shirley Henderson and Sheila Atim taking home both respective awards for their parts in Conor McPherson's Bob Dylan musical.

Bryan Cranston, who made his UK stage debut in the Ivo van Hove's production of Network, won Best Actor, with Bertie Carvel taking home Bet Supporting Actor for playing Rupert Murdoch in James Graham's Ink - his second Olivier following his win for Best Actor in a Musical in 2012 when he originated Ms Trunchbull in Matilda. Denise Gough won the award for Best Supporting Actress for Angels in America, which she is currently starring in on Broadway and is her second Olivier win.

Graham's play Labour of Love, which starred Martin Freeman and Tamsin Grieg, won the award for Best New Comedy.

David Lan, who recently stood down as the artistic director of the Young Vic following 18 years at the theatre, won the evening's Special Award.
