Jessie Wallace to play 'Maureen' in Rent from 24 Dec

Jessie Wallace will take over the role of 'Maureen' in Jonathan Larson's musical Rent, from 24 Dec 2007. (Replacing Denise Van Outen)

Directed by William Baker, the cast continues to feature Siobhan Donaghy (Mimi), Luke Evans (Roger), Oliver Thornton (Mark), Leon Lopez (Collins), Jay Webb (Angel), Francesca Jackson (Joanne), Craig Stein (Benny).

This new 'remixed' version of Rent, received poor notices from the popular press when it opened at the Duke of York's Theatre 15 Oct 2007, following previews from 2 Oct 2007: THE EVENING STANDARD says, "A strangely disappointing makeover." THE GUARDIAN says, "They call this "Rent Remixed". I'd dub it "Rent Reduced". THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "This clinical, cynical, underpowered revival makes its shortcomings all too apparent...But while the singing is strong, most of the acting is abysmal."

Based on Puccini's La Boheme, Rent has been re-orchestrated and reworked by William Baker and Steve Anderson, the creative team behind Kylie Minogue.

It is designed by Mark Bailey, lighting by David Howe, music supervisor Steve Anderson and sound by Sebastian Frost.

It is produced by The Ambassador Theatre Group, Tulbart Productions and Michael Brenner.

Rent is currently taking bookings to 5 April 2008.
