LEO McKERN HAS DIED AGED 82

Leo McKern, has died at the age of 82. He died at a nursing home near Bath, Somerset, where he had suffered from diabetes and other health problems.

His career spanned more than 50 years from Shakespeare stage roles to playing Clang in The Beatles' 1965 film Help! However, is was best known as the blustering barrister Horace Rumpole in the TV series, "Rumpole of the Bailey" written by John Mortimer.

His last West End stage appearance was in "Hobson's Choice" at the Lyric Theatre in 1995.

He leaves his actress wife Jane Holland and two daughters, Abigail, also an actress, and Harriet, and had one grandchild.
