The show opened at the Palace Theatre 23 March 2009, following previews from 10 March to mostly good notices from the popular press: THE EVENING STANDARD says, "I welcome it with open arms and a glad rag-bag of positive adjectives." THE GUARDIAN says, "It is gaudy, garish and loud and seems to be as much about costumes as content." THE TIMES says, "There’s energy, fun, tunefulness and, above all, the most outrageous swirl of costumes that I...have yet encountered." THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Wildly entertaining."
Priscilla Queen of the Desert - The Musical, which had its world premiere in Sydney, Australia in October 2006, is written by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott, based on the 1994 movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
It is directed by Simon Phillips, designed by Brian Thomson, choreography by Ross Coleman, and costumes by Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner.
Drag queen Mitzi, and friends Felicia and Bernadette make their own personal journeys of discovery as they go across Australia from Sydney to the outback, in a battered old bus named Priscilla, to perform their show - singing their way through disco songs.
