Martin Freeman, star of 'The Hobbit', 'The Office' and 'Sherlock' will play the title role in a new production of Richard III which will be the first production in the second Trafalgar Transformed series, directed by Jamie Lloyd at the Trafalgar Studios from 1 July to 27 Sep 2014.

Shakespeare's bloodthirsty history play follows the Machiavellian pursuits of Richard Duke of Gloucester as he attempts to take over the British throne. Despite his withered arm and hunched back, he manages to woo the widowed Anne and ruthlessly climb to the top of the monarchy, before his ultimate downfall at the Battle of Bosworth.

Martin Freeman was last on stage in 2010 in 'Clybourne Park' at the Royal Court Theatre. Other stage credits include 'Kosher Harry', also at the Royal Court Theatre and 'Blue Eyes and Heels' at the Soho Theatre. He is known for his television roles in 'The Office', and has recently starred on the big screen as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit' trilogy.

Director Jamie Lloyd first presented the Trafalgar Transformed series last year, with new productions of 'Macbeth', 'The Pride' and 'The Hot House'. Further details about the production, including casting and creative team are yet to be announced.
