'Wicked' film wins two Oscars
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande also performed a medley of The Wizard of Oz-themed songs at the Academy Awards, including "Over the Rainbow", "Home" and, "Defying Gravity".
The film adaptation of Wicked, starring Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Jonathan Bailey, won two Academy Awards at the 2025 ceremony in Los Angeles last night (2 March).
The movie, directed by Jon M Chu, was nominated for 10 awards including Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for Ariana Grande and Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for Cynthia Erivo, as well as Best Picture.
The other nominations included Best Costume Design, Best Make-up and Hairstyling, Original Score, Production Design, Film Editing, Achievement in Sound, and Visual Effects.
The Wicked film won Best Costume Design (for Paul Tazewell) and Production Design (for Nathan Crowley). Tazewell made history as the first Black man to receive the award, and is also the first Black costume designer to win an Oscar and a Tony Award, the latter recognising excellence in Broadway theatre.
The film's leading ladies Erivo and Grande performed a special medley of songs at the awards show, including “Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz, “Home” from The Wiz and “Defying Gravity” from Wicked.
Bailey was absent from the awards as he is currently performing in Richard II at the Bridge Theatre in London.
Part two will be released in cinemas this November.
