But did you know the Royal Shakespeare Company doesn't just put on Shakespeare shows? The organization produces plenty of world-class Shakespeare play adaptations, but it also puts on new musicals and exciting world premieres. The RSC's Matilda musical, based on the acclaimed book and film, is one of its biggest hits in recent years, having played at the Cambridge Theatre since 2010. The company's philosophy is that Shakespeare directly responded to the world around him with his own plays and changed the landscape of theatre, and by commissioning new writers to do the same, RSC is honoring Shakespeare's legacy.
The RSC has a rich history. Founded in 1961, the company operates mainly out of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, originally built in 1897 and rebuilt in 1932 following a fire. Its original name was the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, as it was built in the playwright's hometown to commemorate his life and work, and was renamed when the RSC took it over. The company's complex also includes the Swan Theatre and The Other Place.
