Casting has been announced for the Young Vic, Wiener Festwochen and Chichester Festival Theatre production of Cruel and Tender by Martin Crimp after Sophocles' Trachiniae, which opens at the Young Vic Theatre 13 May 2004, following previews from 5 May , and booking to 10 July 2004 (NOTE: No performances from 16 May to 16 June 04)

The cast includes: Kerry Fox (Amelia), Joe Dixon (Herakles), Georgina Acvkerman (Laela), Jessica Claire (Nicola), Lourdes Faberes (Cathy), Toby Fisher (James), Michael Gould (Jonathan), Nicola Redmond (Rachel), David Sibley (Richard).

It is directed by Luc Bondy, designed by Richard Peduzzi, with lighting by Dominique Bruquiere.

Far away a battle rages and an entire city is turned to dust. Amelia can't sleep. She waits for news of her husband. He's a great general and this seems to be a decisive victory. But as the motives for the war start to look disturbingly personal, his wife becomes desperate to hold on to his love.

Martin Crimp's new play takes Sophocles' ancient story of marriage and violence - Trachiniae - and propels it into a modern world of political hypocrisy and emotional terroism.
