Denis Quilley has died aged 75

Denis Quilley died at the age of 75 on Sunday 5 Oct 03 at home, surrounded by this family.

It is believed he died from cancer of the liver.

His last appearance on stage was as Elisha Whitney in "Anything Goes" for the National Theatre earlier this year, for whom he worked on many productions including, at the Old Vic, "The Front Page", "Long Day's Journey Into Night" (also TV), "Macbeth" and "The School for Scandal"; and on the South Bank, "Tamburlaine the Great", "Hamlet", "The School for Scandal", "The White Devil", "Sweeney Todd", "The Merry Wives of Windsor", "Troilus and Cressida", "Candide", "Money", "Humble Boy" (which transferred to the West End) and "Hamlet".

Denis Quilley, who lived in the Highgate area of north London, was awarded an OBE in 2001.

He started his career as ASM at the Birmingham Rep. His extensive credits elsewhere include "The Lady's Not for Burning" at the Globe, a tour of Italy with "Twelfth Night", "The Merchant of Venice" and "Black Arrow" for the Old Vic Company, "Point of Departure" at the Duke of York's, "A Girl Called Jo" at the Piccadilly, "Candide" at the Saville, "Irma La Douce" at the Lyric, Broadway and on US tour, "High Spirits" at the Savoy, "Candida" at the Albery; "Privates on Parade" (SWET Award for Comedy Performance of the Year) and "A Patriot for Me" for the RSC; "Deathtrap" at the Garrick, "The Boys from Syracuse" and "Sweeney Todd" at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane (SWET Award for Best Performance in a Musical), "Fatal Attraction" at the Haymarket, "La Cage aux Folles" at the Palladium; "Antony and Cleopatra", "Venus Observed" and "She Stoops to Conquer" at the Chichester Festival; "My Fair Lady" at the Manchester Opera House, "House of Blue Leaves" at the Lilian Baylis, "The Tempest" at the Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park; and in the Peter Hall Season at the Old Vic, "King Lear", "Waste" and "Waiting for Godot".

His TV credits include Clayhanger, AD, Murder of a Moderate Man, Number 10, The Interrogation of John, After the War, Sherlock Holmes and Shell Seekers.

His film credits include Masada, Murder on the Orient Express, Evil Under the Sun, Privates on Parade and Mr Johnson. He also sang the part of Molikov on the album Chess.
