First Look at Guards at the Taj at Bush Theatre
The Bush Theatre has released official production photos of its current European premiere of Guards at the Taj by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph, which began previews on 7 April and runs at the venue through to 20 May 2017. The New York premiere won the Obie Award for Best New American Play and the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play when it premiered at the Atlantic Theater in 2015. Directed by Jamie Lloyd, the cast includes Danny Ashok (as Humayun) and Darren Kuppan (as Babur).
Guards at the Taj takes an enduring legend about the Taj Mahal and prompts audiences to explore questions about art, privilege and duty.
It's 1648. Agra, India. Imperial guards Humayun and Babur keep watch as the final touches are put to the mighty Taj Mahal behind them. The emperor has decreed that no one, except the masons, labourers and slaves who exist within those walls, shall turn to look at the building until it is complete.
The European premiere features scenic design by Soutra Gilmour, lighting design by Richard Howell, sound design and original musi by George Dennis, and fight direction by Kate Waters.
