Peggy Mount dies aged 86

Actress Peggy Mount has died at the age of 86.

She died after a long illness at a nursing home in Northwood, London. She recently lost her sight and had suffered a series of strokes.

She is best known for playing battleaxe roles like 'Ada' in the vintage sitcom "The Larkins", which ran on ITV from 1958 to 1964. She is also known for her role in the '70s sitcom "You're Only Young Twice", set in a retirement home.

She starred in the West End for many years, winning praise for performances in "All Things Bright And Beautiful" and "Romeo and Juliet" at the Old Vic.

Between 1983 and 1985 she was with the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford and the Barbican appearing in "Measure for Measure" and "The Dillon"

In the 1980s she had parts in the popular TV series "Inspector Morse" and "Casualty".

She was last on the London stage as 'Marina', the old nurse, in "Uncle Vanya" at the Albery Theatre in 1996.

Peggy Mount received an OBE in 1996.
