Alexia Khadime to star as ‘Elphaba’ in Wicked, at Apollo Victoria Theatre from Monday 9 June 2008
Kerry Ellis , currently starring as Elphaba, will depart from the London production on Saturday 7 June 2008 to star in the Broadway production at the Gershwin Theatre from Tuesday 17 June 2008. She will return to the London production from Monday 1 December 2008.
Alexia Khadime originally joined the cast of Disney’s The Lion King in 2001, aged 17. She returned to the show in May 2005 to star as ‘Nala’ and has been playing the role ever since. Her other theatre roles include ‘Candy’ in the national tour of Whistle Down The Wind; ‘Ronnie Spector’ in the national tour of Leader of the Pack and Cinderella The Musical at the Hackney Empire.
The cast currently includes: Kerry Ellis (Elphaba, Alexia Khadime takes over the role from 9 Jun to 29 Nov 2008, then from 1 Dec 2008 Kerry Ellis returns), Oliver Tompsett (Fiyero), Susie Blake (Madame Morrible, Harriet Thorpe takes over from 14 April), Nigel Planer (The Wizard, Desmond Barrit takes over from 9 June), Dianne Pilkington (Glinda).
WICKED opened at the Apollo Victoria Theatre 27 Sep 2006, following previews from 7 Sep - to reasonable notices from the popular press: THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Remarkable kaleidoscope of magical shocks, surprises and sensations. " THE GUARDIAN says, "Efficient, knowing and highly professional but more like a piece of industrial product than something that genuinely touches the heart or mind." The show has also recently celebrated its 600th performance and has now been seen by over 1.2 million theatregoers since its London premiere in September 2006.
Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, WICKED has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, book by Winnie Holzman.
It is directed by Joe Mantello, scenic design by Eugene Lee, costumes by Susan Hilferty, lighting by Kenneth Posner, sound by Tony Meola, orchestrations by William David Brohn, musical staging by Wayne Cilento and is directed by Joe Mantello.
