In 1809 at Sidley Park, Lady Croom's elegant Derbyshire country pile, the orderly classical Capability Brown gardens are being transformed into picturesque gothic chaos. Meanwhile her adolescent daughter is delving into intellectual and romantic issues with her tutor. Two hundred years later, in the same room, two contemporary academics attempt to unravel the events of 1809 and happen across a scandal. Can they solve the mystery — or are they destined to keep making wrong assumptions? What is the Byron connection and who was the Sidley hermit?
