Gwendoline Christie in A Midsummer Night's Dream

Bridge Theatre’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to stream this week

Nicholas Hytner's immersive production stars Gwendoline Christie and Hammed Animashaun

A Midsummer Night's Dream, Nicholas Hytner's production from The Bridge Theatre, will be the next title to be released as part of NT Live's continuing series of streams, National Theatre at Home. It will be available from 7pm on Thursday 25 June.

Described by the Metro's critic as "the most joyously affirmative Shakespeare production I've ever seen," this immersive production transforms The Bridge into a forest complete with high-flying fairies. Starring Game of Thrones's Gwendoline Christie as Titania, Green Wing's Oliver Chris as Oberon, and Hammed Animashaun, last seen in NT Live's the Barbershop Chronicles, as Bottom.

When four lovers run away to frolic in the forest, and a troupe of actors go there in search of a quiet spot to rehearse, they find themselves in the crossfire of a feuding fairy king and queen. Filled with mistaken identities, spells, and transformations, the stage is set for one of Shakespeare's most famous romantic comedies.

Opened in 2017, The Bridge Theatre was developed by Hytner with Nick Starr. Since opening, it has seen a series of celebrated revivals and world premieres, including a promenade production of Julius Caeser and Maggie Smith in A German Life.

A Midsummer Night's Dream is the first Bridge Theatre production to be featured in the National Theatre at Home series, which has seen millions of theatregoers around the world enjoy a range of productions including One Man Two Guv'nors and Frankenstein.
