Casting announced for Donmar Warehouse's Saint Joan alongside Gemma Arterton

Full cast announced for The Donmar's new production of Saint Joan.

Full casting has today been announced for The Donmar Warehouse's upcoming production of Saint Joan which runs at the central London venue from 9 December to 18 February 2017, with an official opening on 19 December 2016.

Directed by Josie Rourke, Saint Joan is written by Bernard Shaw and features design by Robert Jones, lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Christopher Shutt, music by Michael Bruce, video design by Duncan McLean and movement by Arthur Pita.

The full cast will include Fisayo Akinade, Gemma Arterton, Matt Bardock, Niall Buggy, Richard Cant, Hadley Fraser, Simon Holland Roberts, Arthur Hughes, Rory Keenan, Elliot Levey, Syrus Lowe, Guy Rhys and Jo Stone-Fewings.

"Joan: daughter, farm girl, visionary, patriot, king-whisperer, soldier, leader, victor, icon, radical, witch, heretic, saint, martyr, woman."

The production will be broadcast live to cinemas around the world on Thursday 16 February 2017.

Saint Joan is based on the life and trial of Joan of Arc. Originally published in 1924 following the canonization of Joan of Arc, Shaw dramatises key elements of her life based on records of her trial. The play received its premiere on 28 December 1923 at the Garrick Theatre on Broadway before opening in London at the New Theatre on 26 March 1924.

Notable London productions have previously starred Imelda Staunton, Frances de la Tour, Imogen Stubbs and Anne-Marie Duff.
