Winners of the 48th Evening Standard Theatre Awards have been announced.

The winners were announced at the Savoy Hotel, presented by Rory Bremner. ( The awards will be broadcast by Carlton Television at 11.30pm on Thursday 28th Nov 02.)

BEST ACTOR:
Simon Russell Beale (Uncle Vanya/Twelfth Night)

BEST ACTRESS:
Clare Higgins (Vincent in Brixton)

BEST PLAY:
A Number (Churchill )

SYDNEY EDWARDS AWARD FOR BEST DIRECTOR:
Sam Mendes (Uncle Vanya/Twelfth Night)

BEST STAGE DESIGNER:
Ian Mac-Neil (Plasticine and A Number)

CARLTON TELEVISION BEST MUSICAL:
Full Monty (Prince of Wales)

CHARLES WINTOUR AWARD FOR MOST PROMISING PLAYWRIGHT :
Vassily Sigarev (Plasticine)

OUTSTANDING NEWCOMER:
Jake Gyllenhaal (This Is Our Youth)

SPECIAL AWARD:
Mark Rylance (for his work at Shakespeare's Globe)
