The Hampstead Theatre has announced Roxana Silbert as its new artistic director, following the departure of Edward Hall after nine years in charge.

Silbert, who will also be joint chief executive alongside executive producer Greg Ripley-Duggan, has been the artistic director of Birmingham Repertory Theatre for six years, and will join Hampstead in spring 2019, with her first season beginning in September.

Her other previous roles include associate director at the RSC, ad artistic director of Paines Plough. Her directorial credits include Amedee, What Shadows and The King's Speech (all Birmingham Rep), and upcoming productions include Edmond De Bergerac in March and A Thousand Splendid Suns next June.

On joining the theatre, Silbert, whose first job was as a script reader for the theatre, said: "Hampstead Theatre is where I fell in love with new plays. When I first arrived in London from a city with no producing theatre and a school with no drama department, I had very little experience of theatre. I saw every production there for the first five years of my London life, usually more than once.

"We need new theatre now more than ever to inspire audiences wrestling and celebrating a world that is moving at breakneck speed. I'm honoured and excited to build on Edward Hall and Greg Ripley Duggan's phenomenal success and to join the Hampstead team as we look forward to the future of this unique company."

Her first season will begin in September 2019, which coincides with the theatre's 60th birthday celebrations.
