A look at how women's roles have changed since the start of the last century. Doris, Margaret, Jackie and Rosie, successive generations of a Manchester family, are each determined to seize the new opportunities of a rapidly evolving 20th century. But they are burdened by the load of expectation and disappointment of their mothers before them, and the capricious influence of that most powerful of all matriarchs - Mother Nature.
