Russ Abbot takes over the role of Fagin in Oliver!, from 14 June 2010, replacing Griff Rhys Jones. At the same time, Stephen Moore replaces Julian Glover as Mr Brownlow.
Russ Abbot, who played Fagin for 2 weeks in April last year when Rowan Atkinson was ill, is probably best known for his TV comedy programme, The Russ Abbot Show, which enjoyed more than ten series on different channels. His stage credits include "Camelot' & "A Midsummer Night's Dream' at the Open Air in 2004"; My Fair Lady" at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 2003, Grandpa Potts in "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" at the London Palladium in 2004; "Caught in the Net" at the Vaudeville in 2001. Oliver!, opened at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 14 Jan 2009, following previews from 12 Dec 2008 to reasonably good notices from the popular press: THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "A cracking night of tuneful entertainment." MICHAEL COVENEY for THE INDEPENDENT says, "A masterpiece is restored, but not in its fullest glory." THE TIMES says, "Oliver! remains as good and revivable as anything he [Bart] wrote."
