Samantha Bond will lead the cast of Mike Bartlett's upcoming adaptation of Maxim Gorky's play Vassa Zheleznova at the Almeida Theatre.

Directed by Tinuke Craig, whose production of The Color Purple recently ran in Leicester and Birmingham, Vassa is the story of a merchant's family on the decline. As the marketing material reads: 'The father is dying. The son is spying. The wife is cheating. The uncle is stealing. The mother is scheming. The dynasty is crumbling.'

Samantha Bond returns to the stage to play Vassa, and will be joined by Alexandra Dowling, Arthur Hughes, Daniella Isaacs, Amber James, Danny Kirrane, Kayla Meikle, Cyril Nri, Lee Ross and Sophie Wu.

Vassa marks Barlett's return to the Almeida after his plays Albion, Game and the Olivier Award-winning King Charles III.

The creative team includes designer Fly Davis, lighting designer Joshua Pharo, sound designer Emma Laxton, with movement by Jenny Ogilvie and casting by Annelie Powell.

Vassa is at the Almeida Theatre from 5th October to 23rd November.
