"Smaller" extends 2 weeks to 20 May 2006

Smaller has been extended 2 weeks to 20 May 2006 with Dawn French and Alison Moyet at Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Ave.

Written by Carmel Morgan & directed by Kathy Burke, the play opened 4 April 2006, following previews from 28 Mar to mixed notices from the popular press: CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Smaller is a powerful play." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Kathy Burke's adroit production, with a strangely mixed evening." BENECT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "It's not until the second that...the temperature of Kathy Burke's production moves towards the high-fever mark." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Starved to the point of emaciation, of both incident and wit".

The Life and soul of the staff-room, Bernice Clulow's selfless devotion to her disabled mother, Maureen is legend. Yet every evening she heads home, the smile becomes fixed: Mum will want to talk. She demands despatches from the human race, but Bernice just wants to kick her shoes off (And her Mum's head in). Missing out on those precious mother-daughter moments, Cath Clulow wisely flew the best straight from school. Now belting out karaoke classics to vomiting, rollocking hen parties in Puerto Banus, she wonders how a promising career in musical theatre has gone so horribly off-key. House-bound, honour-bound and homeward-bound, the Clulows pick their way through a minefield of guilt, resentment and fear.
