All female version of Othello at The Space from 5 Oct 2010
Painted Stage presents an all female version of William Shakespeare's Othello, at The Space, in Isle of Dogs, east London, from 5 to 16 Oct 2010.
Directed by Stewart Melton, designed by Amy Penrose, lighting by Nicole Porter.
cast includes Vanessa Sampson (Bianca/Othello), Christina Carty (Desdemona/Cassio), Bethan Clark (Emilia/Iago).
All-female production puts three women - Desdemona, Iago's wife Emilia and the courtesan Bianca - at the centre of the drama. Using song, mask and physicality to retell the original play from their points of view, they ask us: what is it to be possessed by jealousy, by hatred, by love?
Two empires at war: Christian Venice versus the Islamic Ottoman Turks. Caught between them, taboo-breaking lovers Desdemona and Othello, African general and saviour of Venice. But Iago is determined to drag them into a hell of jealousy and confusion.
