Penelope Wilton cast in Donmar's Hamlet

Casting has been announced for the Donmar's production of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, which opens at the Wyndham's Theatre 3 June 2009, following previews from 29 May - running to 22 Aug 2009.

Joining previously mention Jude Law as 'Hamlet' is Penelope Wilton (Gertrude), Kevin R McNally (Claudius), Ron Cook (Polonius), Matt Ryan (Horatio), Alex Waldmann (Laertes), Peter Eyre (the Ghost of Hamlet's Father/Player King), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Ophelia), John MacMillan (Rosencrantz), Gwilym Lee (Guildenstern).

It is directed by Michael Grandage.

Penelope Wilton's London stage credits include "The Family Reunion" "The Chalk Garden" both in 2008 & "John Gabriel Borkman" in 2007 all at the Donmar Warehouse; "House of Bernarda Alba" at the National in 2005; "Afterplay" at the Gielgud in 2002; "Little Foxes" at the Donmar Warehouse in 2001; "The Seagull" at the Barbican in 2000; "Cherry Orchard" at the Albery 1996; "Landscape" at the National in 1994. Her film credits include , The History Boys, Match Point, Pride and Prejudice, Calendar Girls and Iris.

The King of Denmark is dead. Consumed with grief, Prince Hamlet determines to avenge his father's apparent murder, with devastating consequences for his family and the kingdom.
