Tina the Musical, a Tina Turner jukebox musical is in the works for London's West End
Tina Turner heading to the West End stage.
It has been announced that Stage Entertainment are currently developing a new musical based on the story of Tina Turner. The new musical has been written by Katori Hall, with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins, and currently features direction by Phyllida Lloyd, set and costume design by Mark Thompson, choreography by Anthony van Laast and musical supervision by Nicholas Skilbeck.
On Friday 16 December Tina Turner joined the creative and producing teams in London at a workshop presentation of the new piece.
She commented on the news: "We have been working on the musical for over a year now and today I am delighted to be able to share our news as we begin the next chapter of our journey. It has been wonderful to collaborate with Katori and Phyllida and to have my story nurtured by such an amazing creative team is thrilling. London has always had a very special place in my heart and it's wonderful to be back."
Currently titled Tina the Musical, the show would follow in the footsteps of the 2013 Olivier Award-nominated musical Soul Sister which was based on the life of Ike and Tina Turner and ran at the Savoy Theatre for a limited run.
Tali Pelman, Group Creative Director, Stage Entertainment said: "It's been an honour for us all to collaborate so closely with Tina Turner on this project. Tina is a music legend and her iconic songs are matched only by the power and inspiration of her remarkable and moving story. We are delighted to be working with Katori Hall, whose writing has a heart and humour that beautifully captures Tina's life story, and to have the extraordinary director Phyllida Lloyd at the helm of such a talented creative team. It's been exciting today to see the project move into its next phase."
Director Phyllida Lloyd and choreographer Anthony van Laast have previously collaborated on the hit jukebox musical Mamma Mia! which continues to run in London at the Novello Theatre. Lloyd is a director of drama, opera and musical theatre and recently directed the hit film adaptation of 'Mamma Mia!' as well as 'The Iron Lady'.
Further details about Tina the Musical are yet to be announced.
