## "Nutbush City Limits”

Break out of the “Nutbush City Limits” in *Tina - The Tina Turner Musical*. Tina and Ike Turner’s 1973 song commemorates her childhood growing up in the small Tennessee town. If you’re visiting Nutbush though, they’re aren’t any real city limits to mark out the rural Nutbush community. “Nutbush City Limits” opens the Tina musical.

## "Don’t Turn Around”

Tina Turner recorded “Don’t Turn Around” in 1986 as a B-side for “Typical Male.” However, you may have heard other artists cover the Tina Turner song: Bonnie Tyler, Neil Diamond, and Ace of Base all recorded their own versions in the following years. ## “Shake a Tail Feather”

Tina and Ike Turner covered “Shake a Tail Feather” for their 1968 album So Fine. The So Fine album made history as the first album recorded under the Pompeii label. The Five Du-Tones released the original “Shake a Tail Feather” song in 1963. 

## “The Hunter”

Listen out for the blues single, “The Hunter”, in *Tina - The Tina Turner Musical*. Albert King first recorded the song in 1967, and two years later, Ike and Tina Turner covered “The Hunter” to Grammy-nominated acclaim.

## “Matchbox”

Ike Turner’s King of Rhythm recorded “Matchbox” for a 1991 release. Kenny “Blue” Ray and Mike Sanchez and His Band have since covered “Matchbox.” Ike Turner’s “Matchbox” shouldn't be confused with Carl Perkin’s 1957 song of the same name.

## “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine”

Rose Marie McCoy and Joe Seneca wrote “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine” for Tina and Ike Turner for a 1961 release. The record sold over a million copies, and made history for the pair as their first Grammy-nominated song.

## “A Fool in Love”

Don’t be a fool and see *Tina - The Tina Turner Musical* in London. Tina and Ike Turner’s debut song “A Fool in Love” is performed in the musical. The track also made history as Tina’s first professional release. 

## “Let’s Stay Together”

Al Green first released “Let’s Stay Together” in 1972. A decade later, Tina covered “Let’s Stay Together” to mark her 1983 comeback in the music industry. “Let’s Stay Together” was Tina’s first solo song to enter the UK Top 10 music charts.

## “Better Be Good to Me”

Hear the Grammy-winning song, “Better Be Good to Me,” in *Tina - The Tina Turner Musical*. Spider originally released the song in 1981, but Tina’s thrilling 1985 cover version saw her win the Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

## “I Want to Take You Higher”

Sly and the Family Stone recorded “I Want to Take You Higher” as a B-Side to “Stand” in 1981. Later that year, Ike and Tina Turner covered the song. Perhaps shockingly, the cover version peaked above the original recording in the charts. The Jackson 5, Duran Duran, and Hanson have covered “I Want to Take You Higher.

## “River Deep Mountain High”

Ike and Tina Turner recorded the infectious pop-rock song “River Deep Mountain High” for their 1966 album of the same name. Nowadays, you can expect to see “River Deep Mountain High” on album compilations, but at the time of release, critics panned the song. The Supremes and the Four Tops later covered “River Deep Mountain High.”

## “Be Tender with Me Baby” 

Listen to Tina Turner’s 1990 rock ballad, “Be Tender with Me Baby” in Tina - The Tina Turner Musical. There’s two versions of this song: a 4:18 track and a seven-minute encore-length recording.

## “Proud Mary”

You probably associate “Proud Mary” with Tina Turner. Tina and Ike’s 1971 cover is often considered to be one of their greatest hits, and earned the duo a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Group. However, “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner is a cover version. The Creedence Clearwater Revival.first recorded “Proud Mary” in 1969.

## “I Don’t Wanna Fight”

British artist Lulu originally penned “I Don’t Wanna Fight” for Sade, however Sade later passed the song onto Turner. “I Don’t Wanna Fight” eventually became an anthem for her 1993 autobiographical film, What’s Love Got to Do With It, and became a Grammy-winning song. “I Don’t Wanna Fight” is the final song in Act One of *Tina - The Tina Turner Musical*.

## “Private Dancer”

Act Two of *Tina - The Tina Turner Musical* kicks off with “Private Dancer.” Tina Turner’s 1984 cover of the Dire Straits song earned international acclaim that allowed Tina’s personality to sparkle.

## “Disco Inferno”

American disco band The Trammps recorded “Disco Inferno” in 1976. But if you’re wanting the swinging seventies disco vibes, then Tina Turner brings them too. Turner covered “Disco Inferno” for her autobiographical film. You can also hear “Disco Inferno” in *Saturday Night Fever*.

## “Open Arms”

Tina Turner’s 2004 song, “Open Arms,” is one of the final songs in Tina - The Tina Turner Musical. Recording artists Estelle and K. T. Tunstall appear on the original recording. In the musical, Rhonda, Tina, and the company sing “Open Arms.”

## “I Can’t Stand the Rain”

Ann Peeble’s 1973 song, “I Can’t Stand the Rain” is considered one of the greatest songs of all time by the Rolling Stones. Turner covered it a decade later for her fifth studio album, Private Dancer. The song follows a woman who can’t listen to rain as it reminds her of a past lover.

## “Tonight” 
David Bowie and Tina Turner collaborated on a cover version of “Tonight” in 1984. However, you may not know she recorded the song; Turner isn’t credited on the track.

## “What’s Love Got to Do with It?”

## “The Best” 

We’re saving the best till last! Bonnie Tyler first recorded the song in 1988, but “The Best” gained further popularity thanks to Tina Turner’s cover. Tina’s cover includes a new key change, so it differs from the original track. Turner later covered “The Best” alongside Australian singer, Jimmy Barnes. ## The founding of the National Theatre

The founding of the National Theatre was the result of decades of campaigning. London publisher Effingham Wilson first proposed a national theatre back in 1848, and other prominent figures soon supported the notion — including author Charles Dickens, critic and poet Matthew Arnold, and actor Charles Kemble. 

Impresario Harley Granville Barker and critic William Archer set out detailed plans for the theatre in 1903, but the project kept stalling, with politicians debating whether or not it was worth funding, and the interruption of two world wars.

Finally, the National Theatre Company was founded in 1963 under artistic director Laurence Olivier.  His illustrious debut company included the likes of [Maggie Smith](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/stars-on-stage/maggie-smith), Michael Gambon, Derek Jacobi and Lynn Redgrave. They initially performed at London’s [Old Vic](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/old-vic-theatre) theatre until construction was finally completed on the new National Theatre building in 1977.

## What are the theatre spaces in the National Theatre building?

One of the reasons why the National Theatre is always the place to be is that it can host multiple impressive productions at once across its different spaces. Here’s a look at the spaces in the National Theatre.

### The Olivier Theatre 

The biggest and most prestigious is the [Olivier Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/olivier-theatre-national) (named after Laurence Olivier), which can seat 1,150 people. It’s fan-shaped, creating a wonderful feeling of connection to the performers even with such a vast audience, and its steep rake means great sight-lines throughout the auditorium. This is where you find the big-cast productions.

### The Lyttelton Theatre 

The National’s second-largest space is the [Lyttelton Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/lyttelton-theatre-national) (named for the NT’s first board chairman, Oliver Lyttelton). This is a more conventional proscenium arch configuration, with 890 seats, but is likewise well designed for maximum audience engagement. For example, unlike some older West End houses, there’s no issues with pillars blocking your view.

### The Dorfman Theatre

The National also has the [Dorfman Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/dorfman-theatre-national), which you access from a side entrance to the building. This was originally the Cottesloe (after Lord Cottesloe), but was renamed for philanthropist Lloyd Dorfman, chairman of Travelex Group, in 2014. It’s the smallest space, at 400-450 seats, but the most excitingly flexible. Shows can be staged front on, in traverse or in the round, with seats in the pit raised, lowered or folded away as required.

## Famous National Theatre’s productions

The National Theatre Company began in style with Laurence Olivier’s production of *Hamlet* starring Peter O’Toole. Since then, the NT has produced more than 800 shows under its successive artistic directors: Olivier, followed by Peter Hall, Richard Eyre, Trevor Nunn, Nicholas Hytner, and, currently, Rufus Norris.

Landmark productions include: Peter Shaffer’s *Amadeus*, Howard Brenton’s *The Romans in Britain*, Judi Dench in Harold Pinter’s *A Kind of Alaska*, Ian McKellen in *Richard III*, Tony Kushner’s *Angels in America*, Tom Stoppard’s *Arcadia*, Hugh Jackman in Nunn’s *Oklahoma!*, *His Dark Materials*, Alan Bennett’s *The History Boys*, *War Horse*, Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller in *Frankenstein*, *One Man, Two Guvnors, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time*, Dominic Cooke’s revival of *Follies*, *The Lehman Trilogy*, Brendan Cowell and Erin Doherty in *The Crucible,* and Samira Wiley in *Blues for an Alabama Sky*.

That amazing run continues with the National Theatre’s current offerings. ## The National Theatre’s River Stage Festival

As if that wasn’t enough, the National also hosts a summer festival outside on the South Bank. Over several weekends, there are takeovers from exciting companies and regional venues, like The Glory, James Cousins Company, Shubbak Festival, and Hackney Empire’s Young Producers — think dance, drag and comedy as well as drama. It’s particularly handy when you’re hunting for gifts for your stagey friends.

## Tour the National Theatre

Take a 75-minute guided tour if you want to really get to know this amazing building. You’ll get to see not just the public spaces, but all of the NT’s incredible craft areas, like its carpentry and prop-making. 

The building also has a dedicated New Work department, collaborating with upcoming artists and writers on bold ideas, and pushing the boundaries of theatre with pioneering multimedia and digital projects, including dramas using virtual reality.

But the real joy of the National is that it’s an inviting space 24/7. You can sit in its spacious lobby or at one of the long tables by the bar and read a book, catch up with friends, or even get some work done. There are free exhibitions, fantastic talks and discussion panels, and a general sense of creativity and community. Your complete guide to the National Theatre in London

London’s premier theatrical institution has been producing work since 1963, with some of the biggest worldwide hits coming from the historic venue. 

The Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes and Olivier-winning playwright Jack Thorne will work together on the world premiere of *The Motive and the Cue*. *The Motive and the Cue* will play at the National Theatre’s [Lyttelton](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/lyttelton-theatre-national) stage in spring 2023. 

Set during the rehearsal period of John Gielgud’s 1964 *Hamlet* Broadway production, *The Motive and the Cue* will explore relationships between Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, and Gielgud. 

*The Motive and the Cue* is based on two out of print books: Richard Sterne’s *John Gielgud Directs Richard Burton in Hamlet* and William Redfield’s *Letters From an Actor.*

Jack Thorne writes *The Motive and the Cue*. His plays include *A Christmas Carol* at the Old Vic and *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child* at the Palace Theatre. Following a highly acclaimed, sold-out run at the National Theatre, The Motive and the Cue transfers to the West End for a strictly limited 15-week run, playing at the Noël Coward Theatre from 9 December.

The new play will premiere at the National Theatre in spring 2023.

Trevor McDonald will provide the pre-recorded voice of the Newscaster in *Chess*. Joel Harper-Jackson will continue in the summer concerts, as he takes over the role of Charlie Price in *Kinky Boots* from Matt Willis. Harper-Jackson previously played the shoe factory owner Charlie in the 2019 *Kinky Boots* tour.

“I’m so chuffed to step back into the role of Charlie Price for the concerts at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane this August,” said Harper-Jackson. “I was already honoured to be appearing in Chess, however getting the chance to revisit Charlie again in Kinky Boots is really exciting as it’s a show I hold very close to my heart and I can’t wait to dust off my heels!”

Abracadabra! A new family-friendly musical, *Magical Merlin*, will open in the West End later this year. *Magical Merlin* will play during the October half term, 24 to 30 October, at the [Fortune Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/fortune-theatre).

Set in ancient Britain, *Magical Merlin* follows Merlin who must ensure his powers remain supreme. When King Arthur is born, Arthur’s older sister Morgan le Fay turns people into animals, so Merlin must save the day. *Magical Merlin* will also feature characters such as Sir Lancelot and Princess Guinevere.

*Magical Merlin* is written and composed by Will Barnett. The full cast and creative team will be announced at a later date.

Born into a peasant family, Joan received visions from numerous angels telling her to fight for her country. After convincing Charles VII that they should help the French military, Charles and Joan eventually led France to winning the war. But Joan wasn't there forever; they were captured by the English and burnt at the stake in 1431. Charlie Josephine reinvigorates Joan of Arc’s story with a feminist, 21st-century spin.

The *Heathers* musical centres around Veronica Sawyer, a teenager who finds herself falling into the wrong crowd. A *Heathers* musical film will be released at a later date. “It was always my intention to celebrate The Other Palace as a home for new musicals when I bought it. But, right now, the question is, what do you do with a sell-out hit musical like *Heathers* in the meantime?” said producer Bill Kenwright.

“There’s never a sensible time to take off any musical that is breaking box office records, playing to capacity and receiving delirious standing ovations.”

A singalong and dress-up *Heathers* performance will take place on 18 Jan. 2023.

*42nd Street* follows Peggy Sawyer, a young ingenue who dreams of her name in lights in New York City. When she lands a spot in the chorus line of *Pretty Lady*, she’s suddenly thrust into the lead role and must impress the right people to become a star.

42nd Street features songs including “Lullaby of Broadway,” “We’re in the Money,” and “Shuffle Off to Buffalo.” *42nd Street* was last at Theatre Royal Drury Lane from 2017 to 2019 and was nominated for three Olivier Awards.

The [Olivier Awards](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/whats-on/olivier-awards) celebrate the best of the West End. The Tony Awards champion the big Broadway hits that could take over the world. But, any theatre lover can make all situations feel like an opening night, especially the Eurovision Song Contest.

For one evening a year, the Eurovision Song Contest offers pure, unadulterated joy to millions of viewers, uniting the continent through the medium of song. But, it’s not just the songs worth tuning in for, oh no. There’s crazy costumes, wacky dances and enough forced jokes lost in translation that make you cringe. 

Did you know the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will take place in the United Kingdom? Ahead of the UK Eurovision in 2023, here’s just some of the ways that the Eurovision Song Contest acts a shining example of live theatre. Be prepared.

## One entry was actually called “Theater” 

A song called “Theater” at Eurovision has to kick off this list. In 1980, Katja Ebstein represented Germany with her theatrical piece, all about clowns hiding their true feelings on stage. Obviously inspired by *Cabaret*, Ebstein was backed up by a quartet of mimes. This could easily be sung by the Emcee and nobody would know it’s a Eurovision original.

## ABBA became famous with “Waterloo” 

A Eurovision roundup without ABBA is an act of blasphemy. Before ABBA became a global sensation, they represented their home nation, Sweden, in the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest. The double husband-and-wife group sung “Waterloo”, which is all about a woman who promises to love her partner. After winning the competition, “Waterloo” became a timeless hit played world over and is often regarded as the greatest Eurovision moments of all time. 

The live performance is a work of art too. Just look at their conductor’s Napoleon-inspired outfit, proving that a kitsch outfit and a catchy track goes a long way.

## An actual West End star represented the United Kingdom 

You may know Lucie Jones from the West End production of *Waitress* and [*Wicked*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/313-wicked). But in 2017, she represented the United Kingdom with “Never Give Up On You”. Looking like a Grecian goddess, Jones gave a musical performance that would win Oliviers, but the tactical European televoting didn’t go Jones’ way. Now a musical about the voting at the Eurovision Song Contest would be great…

## Andrew Lloyd Webber made his Eurovision debut

With a musical catalogue including *The Phantom of the Opera, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat* and *School of Rock*, you’d expect [Andrew Lloyd Webber to deliver the Eurovision goods at some point in his career](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatre-news/news/a-complete-guide-to-andrew-lloyd-webber-musicals). 

In 2009, Jade Ewen (who’d go on to star in *Aladdin*) sung “It’s My Time” for the UK, with Lloyd Webber playing live. The musical touch clearly impressed voters though, placing fifth in the public vote. Maybe it says more about me than the song that the first thing I remember is her being hit by the violinist. Gaffes are theatre too.

## Loreen’s “Euphoria” was euphoric 

The Scandinavians are the Eurovision masters, fact. Just watch “Euphoria”, Sweden’s 2012 entry performed by Loreen popularised contemporary dance for a new generation, and tell me you don’t move to these while you’re listening. Now imagine this song as a 11 o’clock musical number when she’s joined by the mystery lover? We need a “Euphoria” musical about this pair now. 

## Conchita Wurst defied the odds with “Rise Like a Phoenix”

If *Everybody’s Talking About Jamie* and *Dreamgirls* ever did a crossover, it would sound like this. Drag artist Conchita Wurst (whose name is inspired by terms for genitalia, which is theatre in itself) represented Austria in 2014 with their striking ballad, rising from the ashes to win the competition. Commanding the stage, Wurst gives a masterclass in holding the audience in the palm of your hand, with the fire rising as a final flourish.

## This disco Ukrainian entry haunts my mind

It’s not [*The Phantom of the Opera*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/308-the-phantom-of-the-opera) inside my mind. It’s this. There are some things I will never understand, but will continue to appreciate as an art from. Ukraine’s 2007 entry is one of said things. Wearing an outfit that the Tin Man would be jealous of, drag queen Verka Serduchka sings in German, English and Ukrainian, just repeating the phrase “Let’s speak DANCE!”. Unbelievably, this came second in the contest. I told you there’s some things I just don’t understand.

## We wanted to be adopted by Russian grandmas 

Stunt acts in Eurovision are their own breed. Russia’s granny-act Buranovskiye Babushki proved you can start your stage career at any age and become global sensations overnight. Sung in English and the Russian language, Udmurt, the octogenarians bob around the stage and strangely, cook at the same time. Placing second in 2012, they really did bring the “Party for Everybody” in Baku. But maybe it was the promise of free food, and I would do a lot of things for free food.

## Iceland took over TikTok

If your song goes viral before the contest, you’re pretty much guaranteed to do well. That’s what happened to Iceland’s 2020 entry, “Think About Things” by Daði og Gagnamagnið. Truly, everything about this song is musical theatre perfection, and if there was a Eurovision jukebox musical, this is the Act One finale.

The keytar interludes, the matching jumpers and the line dancing that took over the world. Even though “Think About Things” never got its glory days at the Eurovision Song Contest (thanks Covid), this will definitely go down as one of the greats. 

## Netta clucked like a chicken

Yes, you read that right. Netta does cluck like a chicken. But, Netta won the Eurovision Song Contest for Israel in 2018 with a girl-pop anthem that any independent woman could get behind. The set belongs in a play too, and we’re imagining the scene. A couple walk into a Chinese restaurant that’s bought a million lucky cats, but only one of them is a toy. This song plays on repeat. The couple can only leave once they’ve found the toy.

## A puppet turkey represented Ireland

Sometimes, I like to imagine what it’d be like inside someone else’s brain. This extends to the creator behind Ireland’s 2008 entry, where a turkey puppet represented their country in a joke song that nobody really understood. It did make history as the first puppet though, so that’s something I guess?

## Finland gave Hard Rock energy 

No, these aren’t the white walkers from *Game of Thrones*. The Finns love heavy metal, so it was no surprise that they entered Lordi for the 2006 competition with “Hard Rock Hallelujah”. Sometimes, you can never tell who’ll win Eurovision, but the voting public tend to enjoy an act that’s never been seen before — and Lordi definitely ticked that box. Yes, it’s terrifying. No, you won’t look away. 

## This Swedish smorgasbord tried to be the Tony Awards

Anything the Tony Awards can do, Eurovision can do better, right? Well perhaps not. In between the contest and the results, the Swedish hosts summed up their nation in six minutes of musical theatre bliss. Any Broadway lover could spot the Tony references from a mile off, the only thing that could have made it more theatre would be Neil Patrick Harris jumping out off a cannon. Could that happen one year? We wouldn’t put it past him to turn up.

## Remember when Madonna appeared?

I’m not really sure why Madonna chose the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest to promote her live tour. I don’t know why Madonna channelled *The Handmaid’s Tale*. I’m even more confused by the dancers wearing gas masks. I do believe that sometimes the most confusing performances are just as entertaining as the five star shows, so maybe that’s why I love this. Who knows really?

## Graham Norton’s commentary is the cherry on top of the cake

It takes a special type of commentator to accurately provide coverage while deprecating every moment of the contest. Eurovision wouldn’t be the same without Graham Norton’s witty takes, illuminating all the theatre moments to us mere mortal who tune in. He even nods to the late Terry Wogan each year; a touch of class in a night of chaotic giddiness.

Ivo van Hove directs [Sheridan Smith](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/stars-on-stage/sheridan-smith) in this new musical adaptation of the John Cassavetes film *Opening Night*, about an actress who is haunted by a dead fan, and how backstage drama fuels the onstage action. The show will have original songs written by Rufus Wainwright.

For a killer plot that’ll have you in stitches, look no further than Steven Moffat’s new comedy *The Unfriend*, which has released rehearsal photos ahead of its West End return on 16 December.

Opening at [Wyndham's Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/wyndhams-theatre), the play is directed by Mark Gatiss and follows holidaymakers Peter and Debbie, who befriend Elsa: a Trump-loving widow from the US. Fresh from breaking Box Office records earlier this year, prepare to welcome The Unfriend back to the West End for a strictly limited run at Wyndham’s Theatre from 16 December.

The celebrated team behind Sherlock, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, bring a new comedy about a couple who make the wrong friend abroad to London’s West End.

Hello, Imelda! One of the buzziest West End openings of 2024 sees the incredible Imelda Staunton starring in Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart’s beloved musical [*Hello, Dolly!*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/37374-hello-dolly). The revival, directed by Dominic Cooke (who worked his magic with Stephen Sondheim’s *Follies* at the National Theatre), plays at the [London Palladium](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/london-palladium) from July.

Staunton takes on the iconic role of indomitable matchmaker Dolly Levi, previously played by the likes of Carol Channing, Barbra Streisand, Mary Martin, and Bette Midler. She’s joined in this London revival by an amazing cast featuring Jenna Russell, Andy Nyman, Tyrone Huntley, and Harry Hepple. 

Herman’s wonderful score includes enduring numbers like “Put On Your Sunday Clothes,” “Before the Parade Passes By,” “Ribbons Down My Back,” “Elegance,” “It Only Takes a Moment,” and the great title number. ## Imelda Staunton’s beginnings

Imelda Staunton was born in north London in 1956. Her parents – first-generation immigrants from Ireland – worked as a hairdresser and a labourer, and the family home was over her mother’s salon. They were a musical clan, too: her mother could play the fiddle and the accordion.

Staunton first took an interest in acting while at school, playing roles such as Polly in *The Beggar’s Opera*. She auditioned for several drama schools and won a place at RADA, graduating in 1976.

Staunton made her professional start performing at venues like Exeter’s Northcott Theatre, and playing starring roles early on – such as George Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan. She then began her successful association with the National Theatre, returning to *The Beggar’s Opera* to play Lucy Lockit in 1982. That scored her the first of her 13 Olivier Award nominations.

A major revival of *Guys and Dolls* that same year at the [National Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/national-theatre) saw Staunton win acclaim and another nomination for her Miss Adelaide (taking over the role from Julia McKenzie) and introduced her to her husband Jim Carter. 

Staunton won her first Olivier in 1985 for her work in two shows: Emlyn Williams’s *The Corn is Green* at the [Old Vic](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/old-vic-theatre) and Alan Ayckbourn’s *A Chorus of Disapproval* at the National. In 1988, she played Sonya in Anton Chekhov’s *Uncle Vanya* in the West End, and she scored another Olivier nod for her Dorothy in *The Wizard of Oz* at the [Barbican](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/barbican). 

Her intense interpretation of Sondheim roles began with an Olivier-winning Baker’s Wife in the original London production of *Into the Woods* at the [Phoenix Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/phoenix-theatre) in 1990. However, the next few years saw Staunton mainly appearing in plays, such as Yasmina Reza’s *Life x 3* at the National, Joe Orton’s *Entertaining Mr Sloane* in the West End, and Edward Albee’s *A Delicate Balance* at the [Almeida Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/almeida-theatre).

But in 2011 came Staunton’s definitive Mrs Lovett in *Sweeney Todd*, opposite [Michael Ball](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/stars-on-stage/michael-ball), at the Chichester Festival Theatre, and then 2014 saw her astonishing Rose in *Gypsy* – first at Chichester, then in the West End. Both saw Staunton win more Olivier Awards.

Staunton returned to drama for a towering Martha in Albee’s *Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?* in the West End in 2017, then switched back to Sondheim for the landmark revival of *Follies* at the National Theatre, playing Sally. Most recently, she appeared in the new version of Alan Bennett’s *Talking Heads* at the [Bridge Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/the-bridge-theatre), in 2020.

## Imelda Staunton in film

Staunton made her big-screen debut in the 1986 historical movie *Comrades*. She appeared in the British ensemble film *Peter’s Friends* in 1992, and she had supporting roles in the Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson-led *Much Ado About Nothing* in 1993, and the Thompson-led and scripted *Sense and Sensibility* in 1995.

More Shakespeare followed with the film adaptation of *Twelfth Night* in 1996, and then the Oscar-winning *Shakespeare in Love* in 1998, in which Staunton played nurse to Gwyneth Paltrow’s noblewoman. She added her voice to 2000 animation *Chicken Run* (and is returning for its upcoming sequel), and appeared in Stephen Fry’s Evelyn Waugh adaptation *Bright Young Things* in 2003.

However, it wasn’t until 2004 that cinemagoers really saw what Staunton can do. She played the title role, a backstreet abortionist in 1950, in Mike Leigh’s searing drama *Vera Drake*; the film won the Golden Lion at Venice, while Leigh and Staunton were both nominated for Oscars and won BAFTAs.

Staunton was memorably creepy as the villainous Dolores Umbridge in *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix*, in 2007, and she reprised the role in its sequel *The Deathly Hallows – Part 1* in 2010. She also reunited with Leigh in 2010 for *Another Year*, and was part of a magnificent ensemble in the British film *Pride* in 2014.

Staunton voiced Aunt Lucy in the *Paddington* films in 2014 and 2017 (and is set to do so again in the upcoming *Paddington in Peru*). She played a fairy in the *Maleficent* films in 2014 and 2019 and joined the *Downton Abbey* cast for its big-screen outings in 2019 and 2022.

## Imelda Staunton on TV

Staunton’s TV career began with an episode of the *Playhouse* anthology series in 1982. Guest roles followed, including in *The Singing Detective* in 1986, and she starred in the romantic comedy series *Up the Garden Path* from 1990-93.

Staunton led the black comedy *If You See God, Tell Him* in 1993, the American TV drama *Citizen X* in 1995, and the British sitcom *Is It Legal?* from 1995-98. She also guest-starred in the Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie sketch show *A Bit of Fry and Laurie*, and she played The Prioress in the TV adaptation of Chaucer’s *Canterbury Tales* in 1998.

More period drama followed with *David Copperfield* in 1999, *Cambridge Spies* in 2003 (in which Staunton played The Queen Mother), *Fingersmith* in 2005, and *Cranford* in 2007. Staunton also played Louisa Durrell in *My Family and Other Animals* in 2005.

Staunton guest-starred in the horror series *Psychoville* in 2010 and played The Interface in an episode of *Doctor Who* in 2011. The following year, she won acclaim – and an Emmy nomination – for playing the wife of Alfred Hitchcock in HBO’s *The Girl*.

Staunton once again teamed up with Michael Ball for Victoria Wood’s *That Day We Sang* in 2014, and, in 2020, she starred in the thriller *Flesh and Blood*, performed one of Bennett’s *Talking Heads* monologues, and joined the cast of comedy series *Trying*.

Most recently, Staunton took on her biggest TV role to date: playing Elizabeth II in the fifth and sixth seasons of royal drama *The Crown* on Netflix. Staunton got a Golden Globe nomination for her regal portrayal of the late monarch, and she reprises the role for the final instalment of the series this month.

Imelda Staunton will be back where she belongs in Hello, Dolly! next summer, as one of the most iconic musicals of all time comes to The London Palladium.

Imelda Staunton returns to the West End in summer 2024 to star in a major revival of Jerry Herman's classic musical *Hello, Dolly!* at the London Palladium.

The National Theatre has set its full cast for *Till the Stars Come Down*, a new play by Beth Steel. Performances begin on 24 January and run until 16 March.

Philip Whitchurch joins the previously announced cast of Lorraine Ashbourne, Lucy Black, Lisa McGrillis, Sinéad Matthews, Derek Riddell, Ruby Stokes, Alan Williams, and Marc Wootton. 

Young performers Maggie Livermore, Cadence Williams, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach share the role of Sarah.

The play, which opens at the Dorfman and marks Steel’s mainstage debut at the National, is set during a wedding over the course of a hot summer’s day. As a family prepares to welcome a newcomer into the fold, passions rise and the limits of love are tested.

## Say hello to Imelda!

Even if you’ve never seen *Hello, Dolly!*, you’ve definitely heard of Imelda Staunton. She has graced the screen in box office hits such as Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and, more recently, Netflix’s royal drama The Crown, as the late Queen Elizabeth II. But she also has a long and much-lauded [career on the stage](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatre-news/news/learn-more-about-imelda-stauntons-career-ahead-of-hello-dolly), earning her 13 Olivier Award nominations.

Plus, her return to the stage also means a reunion with director Dominic Cooke, with whom she worked on the stunning 2017 revival of Stephen Sondheim’s *Follies* at the [National Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/national-theatre).  

## A series of delays hasn’t stopped *Hello, Dolly!* from making it to the West End.

The theatre industry suffered some crushing blows during the pandemic, and *Hello, Dolly!* is no exception. With the Adelphi now housing the sci-fi musical [*Back to the Future*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/22396-back-to-the-future-the-musical-tickets), the show moved to the London Palladium, which means a greater seating capacity (2,300 seats!) and a 10-week run. ## The *Hello, Dolly!* cast is brimming with talent. 

While Staunton undeniably provides the star power for *Hello, Dolly!*, she is just one ofjoined by an incredibly talented group of performers. Olivier Award-winning actress Jenna Russell, who gave critically acclaimed performances in *Sunday in the Park with George, Merrily We Roll Along*, and *Fun Home*, is Irene Molloy. Andy Nyman, best known for his horror play *Ghost Stories*, is Horace Vandergelder. Tyrone Huntley, who portrayed Judas in *Jesus Christ Superstar*, is Barnaby Tucker, and Harry Hepple, set to return to [*Hamilton*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/20561-hamilton-tickets) next year, plays Cornelius Hackl.  

## *Hello, Dolly!* has a winning writing team.

Hello, Dolly! is a classic show from powerhouses Jerry Herman (music and lyrics) and Michael Stewart (book). Herman is best known for composing the music and lyrics for *Mame* and *La Cage aux Folles*, while Stewart authored Broadway musicals including *Bye Bye Birdie* and *42nd Street*.

With Herman’s death in December 2019, this production of *Hello, Dolly!* takes on an even greater significance: Staunton and Cooke reportedly received permission to move around the show’s opening scenes and change one of its songs before he died.

*Hello, Dolly!* regularly attracts talented actors to the title role: Carol Channing, Ethel Merman, Pearl Bailey, Mary Martin, Bette Midler, Bernadette Peters and, perhaps most famously, the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award-winning singer and actress Barbra Streisand. Phew!

Now’s your chance to sing along to hits made famous by some of the most talented women in the business, such as "Put On Your Sunday Clothes," "Before the Parade Passes By," and "It Only Takes a Moment." It’s so nice to have this classic back where it belongs.

[*Cruel Intentions: The ‘90s Musical*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/36246-cruel-intentions-the-90s-musical) has set initial casting for its run at [The Other Palace](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/the-other-palace) in London, ahead of the performance start date on 11 January.

The *Cruel Intentions* London cast includes Rhianne-Louise McCaulsky as Kathryn, Daniel Bravo as Sebastian, Abbie Budden as Annette, Rose Galbraith as Cecile, Josh Barnett as Blaine, Jess Buckby as Ms Bunny Caldwell / Dr Greenbaum, Nickcolia King-N’Da as Ronald, and Barney Wilkinson as Greg. Further casting will be announced in due course.

The musical follows stepsiblings Kathryn and Sebastian, who make a bet to see if Sebastian can seduce the virtuous daughter of their elite high school's headmaster. Based on the hit 1999 film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair, the *Cruel Intentions* musical features a score of pop hits from the 1990s.

A must-see experience in New York and Los Angeles and following a sold-out, critically-acclaimed production in the Assembly Palais du Variété spiegeltent at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical, finally hits London.


The Other Palace will present the jukebox musical adaptation of the hit 1999 movie, with performances beginning on 11 January for a limited 14-week run.

The world premiere of [*Just For One Day*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/35497-just-for-one-day) in the West End has announced its full cast, with performances beginning at the [Old Vic](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/old-vic-theatre) on 26 January.

The *Just For One Day* cast includes Jason Battersby, Cassiopeia Berkeley-Agyepong, Olly Dobson, Joe Edgar, Kerry Enright, Jo Foster, Collette Guitart, Eddie Mann, AJ Lewis, Joel Montague, Rachel Moran, Abiona Omonua, Jack Shalloo, Danielle Steers, Tamara Tare, and Dyd Wynford.

They join the previously announced Julie Atherton, Ashley Campbell, Jackie Clune, Craige Els, James Hameed, Naomi Katiyo, Hope Kenna, Freddie Love, Emily Ooi, and Rhys Wilkinson.

The new musical by John O’Farrell (*[Mrs Doubtfire](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/24395-mrs.-doubtfire), Something Rotten*) tells the story of the 1985 fundraising concert Live Aid, which saw 70 artists across London and Philadelphia perform for free, raising $127 million for charity.

The musical features songs by Bob Dylan, David Bowie, The Who, U2, Queen, The Police, Elton John, Paul McCartney, The Pretenders, and more.

Luke Sheppard (*[& Juliet](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/review-max-martin-musical-and-juliet-shaftesbury-theatre), [The Little Big Things](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/30038-the-little-big-things)*) directs. “It is a great privilege to have such extraordinary artists join our company,” he said in a statement. “This piece is all about the power of people coming together and I can’t wait to see what this group of brilliant performers will achieve on the legendary Old Vic stage.”

The creative team includes set designer Soutra Gilmour, costume designer Fay Fullerton, lighting designer Howard Hudson, musical supervisor and orchestrator Matthew Brind, choreographer Ebony Molina, sound designer Gareth Owen, and video and animation designer Andrzej Goulding.

‘Just For One Day’ reveals full West End cast

Relive the day music brought the world together.   

The jukebox musical brings the story of Live Aid to the stage at the Old Vic next year, featuring songs from Bob Dylan and David Bowie, among others.

The multi-award-winning play *Red Pitch* is set to transfer to the West End’s newest venue @sohoplace for a strictly limited seven-week run beginning 15 March. The play will replace *The Little Big Things,* which runs until 2 March.

The play, written by Tyrell Williams, will return with its original cast: Kedar Williams-Stirling (*Sex Education*), Emeka Sesay (*The Power*) and Francis Lovehall (*Small Axe*). Bush Theatre’s associate artistic director Daniel Bailey directs.

[In a four-star review on London Theatre, our critic said:](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/red-pitch-review-bush-theatre) “The play works as both a striking portrait of friendship rent asunder but also reinforced, and as a separate enquiry into a community under threat.”

Originally performed at the Bush Theatre in February 2022, the production has won a number of awards including the George Devine Award and Best New Play at the OffWestEnd Awards. Writer Williams was named Best Writer at the Stage Debut Awards, Most Promising Playwright at the Critics' Circle Theatre Awards and was awarded the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Most Promising Playwright.

Red Pitch follows three friends and local London boys Omz, Bilal and Joey, who live in an area that is being steadily gentrified. The play explores the impact of this change on London’s communities.

The play, which opens with previews on 15 March and runs until 4 May, is produced by Chuchu Nwagu, Adam Kenwright and Nica Burns.

Red Pitch, celebrated by critics as a “remarkable, next-level coming-of-age story”  by acclaimed writer Tyrell Williams, transfers to London’s newest West End theatre, @sohoplace, following 2 sold-out, award-winning runs at the Bush Theatre.

Tyrell Williams’s play about the pressures of gentrification opens with previews on 15 March and the cast includes Sex Education’s Kedar Williams-Stirling.

Go on a journey to the Upside Down! [*Stranger Things: The First Shadow*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/29263-stranger-things-the-first-shadow) has released new West End production photos, offering a sneak peek into the hit TV series's supernatural world at London’s [Phoenix Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/phoenix-theatre).

Created by writer Jack Thorne, director Stephen Daldry, and producer Sonia Friedman, the stage prequel to the Duffer Brothers’ popular Netflix streaming series is set in the 1950s. *Stranger Things: The First Shadow* features much-loved characters including Joyce Maldonado and Jim Hopper.
