W14 Productions will present the world premiere of Upper Cut at the Southwark Playhouse, south London from 14 January 2015 to 7 February 2015, with an official opening on 16 January 2015.

Written by Juliet Gilkes Romero, the production will be directed by Lotte Wakeham, with further creative team and cast to be announced.

Inspired by true political events, Upper Cut unravels the fight for diversity and black representation through today's Coalition politics, the hope and rebirth of New Labour and delves into the troubled heart of a Labour party struggling under the might of Thatcher's Tory revolution.

"Karen loves politics. She's a rising star but on the eve of a general election she risks her career and reputation in a bitter and contentious fight over whether to allow short lists for black Parliamentary candidates. Deselected by her Party, and betrayed by the men she loves, Karen must embark on a relentless road to power and political redemption."

Playwright Juliet Gilkes Romero is of Caribbean descent, was born in East London and grew up in Suffolk. Her theatre credits include 'At the Gates of Gaza' (Birmingham Rep and UK tour), 'Darfur: A Response - Bilad Al-Sudan (How Long is Never?)' (Tricycle Theatre), 'Diesel' (National Theatre Studio), 'Brethren', and 'Good Iago' (Nottingham Playhouse).
